In every society, there are vulnerable groups of people who are often disregarded by the mere reason that they don’t fit into a particular mainframe of the community. Some organizations that safeguard these minority groups from being discriminated include:
The establishment of Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund by Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin occurred as a result of their arrest. This group protects the interests of minority groups in the US. The arrest of Michael and Larkin who are both journalists by Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio occurred in October 2007.
The execution of the arrest was because the two journalists had revealed information about grand jury proceedings which enclosed details about Joe Arpaio. More to their detention was the demand by grand jury subpoenas to disclose the identity of citizens who read New Times stories involving the sheriff. Their arrest caused many people from the Hispanic community to join in protest prejudices against minority groups.
Larkin and Lacey fought for their First Amendment rights and sued Maricopa County. Eventually, the two journalists were awarded a settlement of $3.75 million after going to the United States Court of Appeals. The 3.75 Million settlements were used to fund migrant rights organizations in Arizona.
Up-to-date, The Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund supports organizations that advocate for freedom of speech, civic participation, civil, human and migrant rights. The two journalists are also co-founders of Village Voice Media and Phoenix New Times.
